Practice Areas and Work Experience

Mr. Liu’s practice areas include cross-border commercial litigation and arbitration. He has experience in dealing with disputes covering a wide range of areas, including but not limited to contracts, Sino-foreign Joint ventures, international competition, share transfers, company control, financial products, cross-border enforcement and interim relief applications. He represents clients in both domestic and international arbitration proceedings conducted under the rules of the SHIAC, HKIAC, UNCITRAL, and many court proceedings tried by Intermediate and High People’s Courts.

Mr. Liu also represents clients in recognition and enforcement proceedings of international arbitral awards or foreign court judgments, as well as the application of interim measures in the aid of arbitrations seated in Hong Kong. He has dealt with cross-border commercial disputes related to various jurisdictions. He has been listed in the Chambers Global & Greater China Region Legal Guide 2024 and recommended in the area of Dispute Resolution.

Mr. Liu is admitted as a solicitor of Hong Kong High Court. He is one of the very few lawyers who understands and practices as dispute resolution lawyer in both jurisdictions.

Key Projects

Legal Counsel for Major International Events

  • Served as legal counsel for the Japanese media delegation during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, handling labor, tax and management issues for more than 50 volunteer service personnel.
  • Acted as legal counsel for the Japan Industry Pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai China, responsible for all legal affairs during the exhibition.
  • Served as legal counsel in China for the Japanese media delegation during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Legal Services in International Air Disasters

  • In March 2014, participated in the Malaysia Airlines MH370 air disaster as a member of the legal counsel group for the Chinese government and victims’ families, providing legal advice on cross-border compensation, labor, inheritance and pension issues, and guiding families to protect rights through legal and rational channels.
  • Represented Chinese families of victims in the 2012 Sita Air accident in Nepal and assisted in cross-border rights protection.

Equity Transfer, Bankruptcy & Dispute Resolution of Sino-Foreign JVs

  • In 2008, represented a Chinese state-owned enterprise in equity transfer of a Sino-Hong Kong joint venture advertising company, providing due diligence, negotiation and contract drafting services.
  • In 2022, acted for the shareholders of a Sino-German-Hong Kong joint venture in its bankruptcy liquidation case on appeal, successfully obtaining a court order for bankruptcy and realizing efficient exit of the enterprise. The case reversed the first-instance decision, obtained the court’s order of bankruptcy, lifted the high-consumption restriction on the Chinese legal representative, and efficiently resolved the exit problem of a “zombie enterprise”. Notably, it successfully bypassed the international arbitration dispute resolution mechanism agreed in the joint venture contract and achieved dispute resolution in a cost-effective and highly efficient manner.

Cross-Jurisdictional Marriage and Family Matters

  • Represented divorce cases involving Taiwan Province, China
  • Assisted an overseas Chinese residing in Japan in a divorce lawsuit, providing Chinese law ascertainment and expert opinions, helping the client obtain full custody of two children and realizing the recognition and enforcement of a Japanese judgment in China.
  • Provided legal services for real estate inheritance and divorce cases involving overseas Chinese from Canada and Germany.

Foreign-Related Investment Disputes & Notarization Services

    • In 2008, represented a Chinese-American client in an investment dispute case and won both first and second instances.
    • Acted for a Japanese merchant in the negotiation of a lease contract in Shanghai.
    • Provided identity authentication services for Canadian banks and guardianship certification for Chinese students studying in Canada.
    • Conducted identity witnessing for Chinese citizens investing in real estate in the UK.

  • She was awarded the title of Excellent Lawyer with Overseas Study Experience in Beijing by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Justice and the Beijing Lawyers Association in 2011.
  • In the 2017 “Beijing Role Models – Search for Model Lawyers” campaign hosted by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Justice and the Office of the Capital Spiritual Civilization Construction Committee, she received the Special Recommendation Award.
  • Additionally, she was honored as an Outstanding Arbitrator by the Dongying Arbitration Commission in both 2021 and 2022, and the arbitral awards she drafted were rated as Excellent Arbitral Instruments.
