Practice Areas and Work Experience

Huanran (Philip) Qiao is a Fellow of the Ciarb, specializing in international commercial dispute resolution. He has served as a partner at several top dispute resolution law firms in Beijing, China, and had also worked as a judge in the Beijing municipal court system for five years.

In the past two decades, he has focused on foreign-related arbitration as the core of his practice and is one of the few Chinese lawyers who can actually operate in international arbitration and appear in court in English. He is often active in the arbitration institutions of the International Chamber of Commerce, the London Court of International Arbitration, CIETAC, HKIAC, CCIA, and BAC. In addi tion, he is skilled at handling complex cross-border commercial litigation and has represented in many complex disputes heard by the Supreme People’s Court of China. Mr. Qiao’s practice focuses on TMT, logistics, automobiles, new energy, overseas trade, and construction industries. Mr. Qiao is also an expert in resolving derivative disputes arising from bankruptcy, and the amount involved in the projects he has handled exceeds RMB 1 billion. In addition, cross-border compliance is one of his areas of expertise, and he has successfully handled business related to the FCPA (US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act), EAR (US Export Control Regulations), and China’s Data Security Law. Mr. Qiao has also published a monograph, “A Guide to Reading English Contracts” (China Legal Publishing House, 2015), and a co-authored work, “A Concise Dictionary of Legal English Core Vocabulary” (China Legal Publishing House, 2014).

  • Represented a Chinese listed company in an equity transfer dispute with a London listed company before LCIA, with London as the arbitral seat, success.
  • Represented a US Fortune 500 company in a technical service contract arbitration with a China Oil & Gas Technology Co., Ltd before CIETAC, with Beijing as the arbitral seat, success.
  • Represented a NYSE listed company in the optical communications industry in an asset purchase agreement arbitration with a China state-owned company before SCIA, with Shenzhen as the arbitral seat, success.
  • Represented a China listed company in a joint venture contract arbitration with a Japanese Fortune 500 company before HKIAC, with Hong Kong as the arbitral seat, settlement; and
  • Represented a HKSE listed company in an Energy Management Contract arbitration with a French Fortune 500 company before CIETAC, with Shanghai as the arbitral seat, partial success.
